What is it

Markdown is a light markup language: you type plain text with a few symbols (a # for a heading, two asterisks for bold) and it becomes a formatted document. This editor shows the rendered result the moment you type — no save button, no publish step, just text in and HTML-looking page out.

Notes & fun facts

Markdown was made for people who thought HTML tags looked too loud in e-mail. It quietly became the writing tool of programmers, documentation sites and the whole README culture on GitHub — proof that a humble format can outlast fancy editors.

Origin & history

Markdown was created by John Gruber with Aaron Swartz and released in 2004. GitHub launched its flavored variant, GFM (GitHub Flavored Markdown), in 2009, adding tables, fenced code blocks and strikethrough; GFM has since become the de-facto standard most people mean by Markdown today.
