Countdown Timer
Count down to a target date and time, or set a duration in hours, minutes and seconds. Pause, resume and reset any time.
Set a target and press Start.
What is it
A countdown is just the remaining gap between now and a chosen moment. The tool keeps a deadline timestamp and subtracts the current time every second. Two ways to set it: point at a future date on the calendar, or type how many hours, minutes and seconds you want to count down.
Notes & fun facts
The most famous countdown in history happened at 89 seconds to midnight on the Doomsday Clock — a metaphor the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists has kept since 1947. Closer to home: every developer has at some point built a countdown to a release deadline.
Origin & history
Mechanical countdown clocks were first used in rocket launches at the White Sands Proving Ground in the 1940s, famously depicted in the 1936 film Frau im Mond by Fritz Lang — its countdown was invented purely for drama, and engineers kept it. Electronic countdown timers became consumer gadgets with digital clocks in the 1970s.
